Building the Vision Your Support Made Possible

SSI has been taking deliberate steps to restore and activate the foundation for childhood literacy in underserved communities. This update highlights the journey so far, from the early vision to the progress underway, and the path ahead.

Where It All Began

SSI set out to rekindle children’s interest in reading and expand access to learning materials for underserved children in Enugu, Nigeria.

The vision was simple: to refurbish a dilapidated children’s library and create a safe, welcoming space where children could learn and grow. The process began with securing authorization and a memorandum of understanding (MOU) from relevant government authorities. What began as a response to this need quickly evolved into a hands-on mission, fully funded by SSI’s co-founders.

The renovation included a comprehensive overhaul of key equipment, with desks, tables, and shelves replaced or refurbished to create a modern, comfortable environment. Within just a few months, the vision began to take shape, transforming from an idea into a living and steadily growing reality. View the full job details on our website

A Defining Milestone: The Launch of the Refurbished Children’s Library

On August 6th, 2025, we officially launched the fully refurbished children’s section of the Enugu State Library, marking the successful completion of the first phase of its mission.

The transformation went beyond aesthetics, guided by intention, as every improvement was designed to create a space where children feel inspired to read, learn, and explore. The launch brought together a wide range of stakeholders and supporters, reinforcing the significance of the initiative.

In attendance were Afia TV, a prestigious local media group that covered the event, Prof Ndubueze Mbah, Honorable Commissioner for Education, the Head of Librarians for Enugu State, pupils from over five schools across the state capital, the library staff, and a broad network of partners committed to advancing literacy. Their presence reflected strong support for SSI’s mission. The event as reported by Afia TV

Sustaining the Vision: Moving from Access to Use

With the renovation complete, SSI entered the next phase of its mission: ensuring the space would be actively used and have an impact on the community. The key question became, what happens next?

SSI took a step back and thought carefully about how children could benefit from the library in practical, meaningful ways. This led to the introduction of structured library visits for schools across Enugu. A town hall meeting with library staff and management followed, creating alignment on how best to run the sessions and sustain engagement.

From Awareness to Action: Expanding Support

Toward the end of 2025, SSI launched a donation campaign as part of the global Giving Tuesday movement to sustain its work beyond infrastructure.

The campaign focused on funding structured educational programs, supporting the logistics of school library visits, and ensuring continuous engagement with the library, while also inviting a broader community to contribute to the mission.

SSI further strengthened its outreach by appearing on Afia TV, raising awareness of the renovated library and attracting public and private support for its continued growth and development.

Ending the Year with Purpose: SSI’s 2025 Children’s Christmas Celebration

On December 12, 2025, SSI partnered with the State Central Library to host a Christmas program that combined learning with seasonal activities. Children participated in reading games, group activities, a science session in collaboration with the Iroko Tree Empowerment Initiative, and a Photo History session led by Chidera Sam Eze of Enugu Photo Fest, which introduced them to stories about their environment.

A Secret Santa activity ensured every child received a gift with additional rewards for active participation in the literacy sessions to encourage enthusiasm for learning.

More than a celebration, the event created a safe, inclusive space where every child felt seen and valued, reflecting SSI’s ongoing commitment to literacy, creativity, and holistic child development.

Where Things Stand Today: Progress and Outlook

Following the success of the Christmas celebration, SSI recognized the need for a more structured and sustained way to engage children in the library. This led to the launch of the “Pages to Power Series,” a monthly program built on the belief that children thrive when given the right tools, exposure, and encouragement.

Designed for children aged 7–12, the series offers interactive, well-rounded learning experiences that balance education with creativity. Each session includes guided reading and comprehension, arts and crafts, literacy games, group activities that build confidence and teamwork, basic health education, and visual storytelling to deepen understanding.

The first session held on March 21 marked an important step in SSI’s commitment to consistent, child-focused programming, with the next scheduled for April 25, 2026.
